Descripción del productoBiografía del autorRaymond P. Scheindlin earned a M.H.L. in Hebrew Literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in Arabic Literature at Columbia University. Dr. Scheindlin served on the faculties of McGill University and Cornell University, and was a professor of medieval Hebrew literature at The Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York. He has been a visiting professor at the Hochschule für jüdische Studien in Heidelberg, Germny and at Harvard University. He specializes in medieval Hebrew poetry, with a special interest in Spain and other regions of Arabic culture. He is also active as a literary translator of medieval and other Hebrew texts. Dr. Scheindlin is a former Guggenheim and Cullman Fellow, as well as a recipient of the Cultural Achievement Award of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Jewish Research and is on the editorial boards of several academic journals.
Not as easy to use as other books in this series published by Barron's I thought this book would be ideal as an aid to revision of Arabic verbs. I am very familiar with some others in the series - the reason I chose this book to help me, rather than other similar publications. However, it is perhaps more suited to those students who are at a much more advanced level than myself. I want to be able to quickly check the conjugation of a verb, not ponder the 'forms'. I am fully aware that Arabic is a Semitic language, with a rather different structure and syntax to the Latinate/Germanic languages with which I am more familiar, all members of the Indo-European Language group, which of course Arabic is not. It seems hard to find suitable books that fall somewhere in the 'middle' for the evening student of Arabic, rather than the full time University Student (all too challenging when doing most of the studying without a teacher) or those facile books published for holiday makers, in transliterated Arabic, for people who want to buy an ice cream or ask their way to the Pyramids. I was disappointed. Conquering the mountain that is Arabic verbs!
